emh and East Midlands Chamber team up to celebrate Black History Month

Leicestershire-based social housing and care organisation emh and East Midlands Chamber have joined forces to promote Black History Month, which runs throughout October.

During the month, the two organisations will run a social media campaign celebrating Black history, arts and culture, and the positive impact it has made on our society. The joint campaign this year showcases the achievements of people in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the East Midlands.

As well as posting key information about inspirational figures, there will also be links to events and activities happening across the region.

The campaign will present the voices of people from carers to CEOs to the question “What are you proud of?” and aims to engage with a range of sectors and communities.

Black History Month began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the worldwide collection of communities descended from native sub-Saharan Africans.

Chan Kataria OBE, chief executive of emh, said: “Building on our joint commitment to promoting diversity across the region, we are proud to be partnering with the East Midlands Chamber once again to celebrate the achievements Black History Month.

“There are many examples of inspiring stories among our diverse communities, particularly over the last eighteen months, and we invite everyone across the East Midlands to join us throughout October in this celebration.”

Lucy Robinson, director of resources and the Chamber’s diversity champion, added: “From across the worlds of sport, music, culture and business, the East Midlands has a proud heritage of Black role models whose impact has been felt beyond the region – from Viv Anderson becoming the first Black footballer to represent England, to the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason becoming the first Black person to win the BBC Young Musician award, and then performing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“We are delighted to once again link up with emh, strengthening our strategic partnership in work around the themes of equality, diversity and inclusion – which we recognise as vital to recognising our vision to enhance East Midlands businesses and communities.”
