Adam Boam: Energy Efficiency Champion of the Year

We’re delighted for Adam who received national recognition at the Energy Efficiency Awards 2025 ceremony in Birmingham on Friday, claiming the title of ‘Energy Efficiency Champion of the Year’.
This award recognises 'someone who has displayed excellence in the industry and contributed significantly to energy efficiency measures in their area.'
From a (long) shortlist of 13, Adam more than deserves to be named Energy Efficiency Champion of the Year – for his unwavering passion and commitment to educating, encouraging and supporting social housing residents, living in rural areas, through the retrofit process, and beyond!
He’s overseen the comprehensive and successful retrofits of 109 rural social homes across the Midlands. Adam’s personal, passionate and positive approach means we’ve had an almost 100% access to homes (only one declined, and even that was a very polite no, with a positive acknowledgement of Adam’s encouragement and explanations).
Success through resident engagement
Although the retrofits are a team effort, Adam’s approach to resident engagement and championing the energy efficiency improvement works were absolutely crucial to the success of the project.
From encouraging initial buy-in to the works, to ongoing support to get the best out of the new systems, Adam always goes above and beyond to ensure the rural households benefit from energy efficiency improvements.
He’s received recognition from the housing sector and energy efficiency professionals. But it’s the amazing feedback from happy residents that makes all his hard work worth it. The words they use to describe him include:
- Superstar
- Hero
- Fabulous
- Brilliant
- Fantastic
- 5-stars
A bit about Adam
Adam joined Midlands Rural Housing in October 2023, as a Tenant Liaison Officer – a new role for the organisation. It’s as if the job was made for him, he’s a perfect fit. He focuses on delivering energy-efficiency retrofit projects for Warwickshire Rural Housing Association and Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association.
By really understanding the benefits of energy efficiency and the processes involved, he’s able to explain and reassure residents, remove barriers, and ensure we can improve the energy efficiency of as many homes as possible.
He’s a genuine Energy Efficiency Champion. It just comes naturally to Adam. He can explain the benefits, the process, and the outcomes with absolute sincerity.
In Adam’s own words:
“I was brought on to be a tenant liaison officer, to ensure that the project went as smoothly as possible, that the residents didn’t feel like they were being pushed into a box, and that they had a good understanding of what was actually going to be happening and why."
He always goes above and beyond
Adam’s personable, ‘let’s solve this’ attitude is a winner with our residents. Nothing is too much trouble. It’s this positivity that’s enabled more energy efficiency works to be completed.
Here are just a few real examples of how he’s gone above and beyond to support residents through the energy efficiency retrofit works:
- A resident who’d been signed off work due to mental health issues needed extra support and time with the process – Adam provided this with pleasure.
- To keep a promise that he’d made to a resident during his intro visit, Adam cancelled a day’s leave and travelled 250 miles – just to keep that promise.
- When he was asked to arrive at a resident’s home at 7.30am to meet them for just 10mins before they leave for work – it was no problem for Adam.
- When he checked a house and realised that it hadn’t been cleaned to the required standard, he carried out a last minute remedial clean himself – so that the household returned to a spotless home.
- When a household needed to move out whilst the works took place (due to suffering from COPD) but were concerned about their home being unoccupied – Adam did extra visits to reassure them all was ok.
What the residents say about him
“Adam was fantastic right from start; we were so pleased with him and all his support. He told us what would happen, explained everything and came round during the day. He always did what he said he would.
“The works seem daunting at first, but you don't feel your age when talking to Adam, he made us feel very supported.”
Ian, Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association resident
“Adam went over and above. We don't really like change, but Adam supported us throughout the whole thing.”
Mary, Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association resident
As well as Adam’s personal win, we also bought home two other trophies:
- National Poverty and Vulnerable Customer Support of the Year: 2nd place for Warwickshire Rural Housing Association
- National Housing Association of the Year: 3rd place for Northamptonshire Rural Housing Association
It’s a fantastic achievement; a real celebration of our commitment to making our homes as energy efficient as possible.
